“Learning how to use different formats has made me a better photographer. When I started working in medium format, it made me a better 35mm photographer. When I started working in 4×5, it made me a better medium-format photographer.”
— Mary Ellen Mark

For Beginners: The Allure of Medium Format

May 24, 2025

Medium format is about looking at the world through a wider window, with more profound detail. The wide-angle compositions I studied during my cinema education in Montreal truly find their breath on 120mm film. The square format (6x6) forces you beyond the conventional; do you center your subject, or do you command the void? It is, in essence, a process of visual meditation.

Why Analog?

Everything is fast and flawless in the digital world. But analog offers an inherent unpredictability. The absence of instant feedback after pressing the shutter, the patient wait for the development process... It is the grain and light leaks born from that very journey that yield the raw truth I seek in journalism. Every frame holds an effort; every 36 exposures hides a discipline.
